KLANG: Residents in Klang, Kuala Selangor and nearby areas have been advised to be on alert following the issuance of a high tide phenomenon beginning today.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the warning issued on Friday forecasted that the high tide phenomenon would occur from today at a height of over 5m.
“We have already issued a warning regarding the high tide for Sunday, Sept 14 and 15 with a height of more than 5m.
“On Dec 17 and 18 last year, the tide reached 4.7m to 4.8m,” he told reporters after inspecting upgrading work on a drainage system in Taman Melawis here yesterday.
He said the state government had already identified several flood hotspots around Taman Melawis.
Several short-term measures will be implemented by the state government, including installing more pumps to accelerate water outflow.
Commenting on the meeting with all agencies and parties involved to prepare for floods tomorrow, Amirudin said the Selangor government will propose measures sending in advance equipment to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in frequently flooded areas.
He said this was to avoid panic, which happened during the December 2021 floods when most PPS equipment was stored in a centralised area, making delivery of the equipment difficult as many roads were flooded, Bernama reported.
Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, the Selangor State Secretary’s office announced that this month, the highest sea level at the Port Klang Station is expected to occur tomorrow which is expected to be 5.5m at 7.18am, while on Sept 13 and 28, the sea level is expected to reach 5.4m at around 6.42am until 7.49 am.
“On Sept 14, 27, and 29, the sea water level is expected to touch 5.3m at 6.52am until 8.16am.
“Klang residents are reminded to be prepared for the high tide phenomena and the North East Monsoon beginning in September until December, which could cause floods and bunds to collapse,” said the post.Bukit Melawati assemblyman Juwairiya Zulkifli, through her official Tiktok account, said as many as 13 areas in Kuala Selangor were likely to be flooded following the high tide phenomenon and continuous rain from Friday until Sunday.
