Four killed in East Coast Highway crash


KUANTAN: A container lorry crashed into a tow truck, which was hauling a vehicle, killing the truck driver and three inside the towed vehicle early yesterday morning on the Kuantan-bound side of the East Coast Highway 1 (LPT1).

Apart from the four deaths in the accident that occurred at KM135.7 of LPT1, several others were injured in the accident which also involved a Proton Exora, which was being towed, and a Proton Waja.

“The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 3.26am regarding the accident. The container lorry is believed to have crashed into the truck which was in the process of towing the Proton Exora, which broke down on the highway,” said state Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria in a statement, reported Bernama.

“The Proton Waja is said to be on the roadside at the time. The impact of the crash sent the Proton Exora plunging into a 40-foot-deep ravine.”

Temerloh police identified the deceased as Proton Exora passenger Mohmed @ Mohamed Shamsuddin, 75; his wife Kamariah Hamzah, 72; a 12-year-old boy Danis; and tow truck driver Mohd Azuan Zainal Abidin, 53.
