KOTA KINABALU: Roused by the sound of screaming and banging on the door, a family of eight woke up to find their house on fire.

Without a second thought, they ran for their lives. However, only seven made it to safety.

Six-year-old Mohd Adlinsyah Mohd Adsni was later found dead in a room of the wrecked home in the Kinabatangan district.

State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Misran Bisara said they received a call about the fire in Kg Perpaduan around 12.40am yesterday.

He revealed that five people suffered different stages of burn injuries, from 5% to 70%, on their bodies.

They are Mohd Adsni Sani, 43, his wife Alina Sahari, 41, their children Mohd Isnain, 12, and Mohd Adlisyam, three, and their 15-year-old nephew Mohd Ishak Hafsham.

The other two occupants, the victim’s grandmother Minah Kanawi, 77, and younger brother Mohd Mikail, escaped unhurt.

Kinabatangan Fire Station Chief Nurul Azlan Shah said all the victims were taken to hospital for treatment.

“We were told that neighbours who spotted smoke and fire from the wooden house screamed and banged on the door to wake up the family,” he added.

In Kota Belud, a 65-year-old woman suffered burns on her back during a fire that broke out at her house in Kampung Narinang around 10.15am yesterday.

The victim, Dolim Parantis, was sent to hospital for treatment, said a Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson.

He said the blaze involved a two-storey house which was completely burnt down.
