PETALING JAYA: The passing of veteran MCA leader Datuk Gan Boon Leong is a big loss to society and the country, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
"Boon Leong was an influential leader in Melaka who had served in the state executive council for three terms. He was also state liaison committee chairman for 12 years and also headed several non-governmental organisations.

"His son, Datuk Gan Tian Loo, has already picked up his mantle by being involved in politics to serve the people," the MCA president said in a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 15).
The 85-year-old former Mr Asia and Melaka MCA chief passed away early Monday morning.
Dr Wee said that for Boon Leong, the sweetest moment in his political career was when he defeated DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang in 1982 to capture the Bandar Hilir seat with a large majority.
"He continued the streak by winning in the general election five times subsequently.
"Boon Leong has sacrificed a lot for the people in Melaka and was instrumental in the creation of Jonker Street, which has now become a renowned tourist attraction bringing in enormous economic benefits to the locals.
"His contributions will always be remembered. May he rest in peace," the Transport Minister added.
