KUALA LUMPUR: There is a “strong possibility” that the 15th General Election (GE15) could be called this year, says Wanita Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

“GE15, in which we can call for a new mandate from the people, can manifest at any time from today,” she said during her speech at the Wanita Barisan convention here on Sunday (Aug 14).

"This war (GE15) will come latest by July next year and in fact, there is a strong possibility it will happen this year,” she added.

Noraini said there is no time to be laid back as the “war drums” started beating long ago.

She said GE14 in 2018 and the Covid-19 pandemic brought about changes to the lifestyles of the people and the country’s administration, adding that the people’s support has also become dynamic and could easily change.

Noraini, who is also the Higher Education Minister, said Barisan needs to come up with a “new offer" to the people to be victorious in the upcoming polls.

“While we discuss change, it is certain that we (Barisan) need to come up with a new offer that will provide a new hope to the people,” she said.

Therefore, she said this new offer was needed to win the people’s hearts, and had to be something "fresh... that will be suitable with the current situation."

Noraini said the convention was an important platform to study and focus on the main issues faced by the people.

She also called on the Wanita wing to be the backbone of Barisan’s battle.

A host of key speakers, including Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, has been lined up for the event.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is set to deliver his speech during the Bicara Hati Perdana Menteri slot and Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be launching the event and delivering the closing speech.
