MORIB: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle RM670,000 worth of methamphetamine with the arrest of a man and woman here.
Selangor MMEA director Maritime Captain Siva Kumar Vengadasalam said surveillance efforts between the Police General Operations Force and Selangor MMEA led to the arrest of the 46-year-old man and 44-year-old woman at around 5.50pm on July 29.
"We intercepted the vehicle the suspects were traveling in around the coasts of Morib here and found 15 packages of Chinese tea.
"Further checks revealed the packages contained about 15.88kg of a crystal like substance believed to be syabu," he said in a statement on Friday.
He said both suspects and the seized items were sent to the Kuala Langat Narcotic Crime Investigation Department office for further action.
"The case is currently being investigated as drug trafficking. We believe the suspects were attempting to transfer the drugs from their vehicle to a boat.
"We believe the drugs would have been smuggled to Indonesia." he said adding that that they would continue to take stern action against anyone who broke the laws at sea.
Those with information on any crime or emergency at sea should contact the MMEA operations centre at 03- 3176 0627 or the MERS 999 for immediate response.
