Selangor BN Convention: Tengku Zafrul's appointment is his first step to be a politician, says Ahmad Zahid

SHAH ALAM: Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz's appointment as Selangor Barisan Nasional treasurer is his stepping stone to become a politician, said Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said that Selangor Barisan chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar had discussed with him the possibility of offering Tengku Zafrul the position and that it was found that he does fit many criteria for the job.

"This is his first step for him to jump into the world of politics.

"He is able to contribute to the position, which was vacated by Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos.

"The opportunity is the best not only because he is known but he also must have a wish to be directly involved in politics," Ahmad Zahid told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Selangor Barisan Convention 2022 at the Setia City Convention Centre here on Sunday (July 31).

Ahmad Zahid added that Tengku Zafrul has been an Umno member since 1993.

Tengku Zafrul being a Selangor native also made him a suitable candidate to accept the offer as Selangor Barisan treasurer, said Ahmad Zahid.

On Tengku Zafrul's candidacy in the next general election, Ahmad Zahid said Barisan was looking for heavyweight candidates to place in Selangor and that it did not necessarily have to be Tengku Zafrul.

"We are looking for heavyweight candidates, not necessarily Tengku Zafrul, maybe there are other professionals, corporate figures and Selangor youths.

"That's why I ask for Barisan Selangor leaders to be open-minded to accept anyone who has been accepted as candidates as we want Selangor to come back under the fold of Barisan and Umno," said Ahmad Zahid.
