SEPANG: Malaysia is seeking re-election to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) council for a sixth term, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The Transport Minister said Malaysia has been an ICAO council member since 2007 and that it had already announced its candidature for the post.

“We intend to retain our post there and we are seeking support from other members and lobbying hard,” he said at a press conference after officiating at the rebranding of Malindo Air to Batik Air and the launch of the Boeing 737-8 as part of the airline’s fleet.

He added on Monday (July 11) that the last few months also saw him attending various aviation conferences and assemblies to obtain support.

“We want to show the world that the national aviation industry is committed.

“This can be seen with Malaysia also being one of the pioneer countries participating in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) programme as well,” he said.

The MCA president added that despite facing stiff competition from other countries, he hoped that Malaysia would be able to retain its seat based on its 15-year positive track record.

He also said that Malaysia will be attending ICAO’s 41st Triennial Assembly in September 2022, which will be held in Montreal, Canada.
