Two premises selling cooking oil and groceries online raided

PUTRAJAYA: Two premises in Petaling Jaya and Puchong were raided on July 1 on suspicion of selling cooking oil online via e-commerce platforms in violation of the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

In Petaling Jaya, a rented house was raided, while in Puchong the operation was run out of a shophouse. Both premises were also used to store and package groceries.

According to Bernama, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry’s (KPDNHEP) enforcement director, Azman Adam said the raid in Petaling Jaya found 255kg of subsidised cooking oil in 1kg packets and groceries meant for sale online.

“The operators also failed to produce a permit or document under the Control of Supplies Act 1961,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that the 1kg packet of cooking oil was sold at RM2.50 each.

Also seized were several business-related documents, with the total value of the seizure estimated at RM637.50.

In Puchong, the team found 27 units of 1kg, 2kg and 3kg bottles of cooking oil stored at the premises.

“The operator produced a valid retail licence under the Control of Supply Act 1961 but the address registered on the licence was different from the address of the premises that stores the items,” he said.

A statement from a local woman who claimed to be the supervisor was recorded as she was suspected of committing an offence under Section 20 (1) of the Control of Supply Act 1961. The total value of the seizure was estimated at RM858, he said.

Azman added that investigation papers were opened and further investigation into the two cases would be conducted under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 to track the cooking oil distribution chain and its supply source.

He said companies could also be investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds from Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Act 613).

“KPDNHEP is warning traders who deal in subsidised goods, especially cooking oil, to comply with the existing laws, and the ministry will not compromise with the parties involved in the misappropriation of controlled goods,” he said.
