KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin gave a dressing down to tardy staff from the state Works Ministry.
Bung Moktar, who is also state Works Minister, said he had received frequent phone calls from the public complaining about staff from various agencies under his ministry either being inaccessible or outright absent.
“I always receive public complaints on district engineers from the Water Department or Public Works Department (PWD) not coming to the office or being difficult to meet.
“For example, someone called me and complained that one of the district engineers has not been in the office for three days. How am I to respond to this?
“We can’t hide this because this is a public complaint. This is how you are when you become district engineers, showing your true colours, then it will be very difficult for us,” he said.
Bung Moktar said he had notified Sabah PWD director Datuk Ali Ahmad Hamid about the issue, adding he will be forced to inform State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong if no action is taken against the errant officers.
“I am sorry but this is the reality of what’s happening on the ground,” he said.
He issued the reprimand during a ceremony to celebrate excellent Sabah PWD staff and others who are retiring soon. The event was held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Monday night.
Bung Moktar also expressed concern that the Sabah Works Ministry had very few registered professional engineers and architects.
He said this was embarrassing as federal and state government policies needed to be carried out by such professionals.
He wants at least 30 people to sit for the IR (professional engineer) examinations next year in an effort to create more engineers for the civil service.
Sabah, he said, is facing a lot of issues with regard to water, road and sewerage works.
“Our mission is to expedite all development projects approved by the government.
“We need to address these issues together. I will prepare a master plan and directive on these matters to ensure the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Barisan Nasional state government is committed towards developing Sabah,” he added.
