Chicken prices expected to increase above RM10 per kg after June 30, says livestock farmers' group

MELAKA: Chicken prices are expected to rise above RM10 per kg after the maximum price scheme ends on June 30, says the Federation of Livestock Farmers’ Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM).

FLFAM’s advisor Datuk Jeffrey Ng Choon Ngee said chicken breeders have to bear higher operational costs, which would push chicken supplied by farms to RM7 per kg from July 1.

He said the current maximum chicken retail price of RM8.90 per kg was based on the current farm price of RM5.60 per kg and the chicken breeders would not be able to afford the present pricing without subsidies from July 1.

“The farm price for chicken may increase to RM7 (per kg) without the subsidy and based on this situation, the price of chicken is anticipated to soar,” he said here on Friday (June 17).

Ng said FLFAM hopes a meeting could be arranged between them and stakeholders in the government to look into a win-win situation on the pricing after July 1.

“We hope for a meeting so that a proper price mechanism is introduced and that no parties incur losses due to increase in operation costs.

“We also don’t want to see consumers being burdened with high chicken prices,” he added.
