PUTRAJAYA: Two major organisations will play a greater role in the poultry industry ecosystem to strengthen food security and ensure supply will not be disrupted, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Prime Minister said the National Farmers Organisation (Nafas) and National Cooperative Movement of Malaysia (Angkasa) would now be involved in chicken production from end-to-end.

"This includes large-scale maize farming for chicken feed.

"Nafas and Angkasa will be involved right from supply of chicks, feed, vaccines, processing centres, distribution – all the way until it reaches consumers," he said after meeting representatives from the two organisations on Tuesday (June 14).

Nafas is targeting the control of 20% of the market with 144 million chickens produced annually while Angkasa's expected output is 30 million chickens a year.

The Prime Minister said both Nafas and Angkasa would play a proactive role in maize farming to ease dependence on imports.

"For this purpose, Nafas has identified an area of 12,140ha in Kelantan and Terengganu, which was used to plant tobacco before.

"Angkasa, meanwhile, with assistance from the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry, will plant the crop on 4,000ha of land nationwide," he said.

Ismail Sabri said each hectare could produce five tonnes of maize and could meet some 20% of import needs for five years.

He said that the effort and commitment by the two organisations would help the government tackle the issue of high chicken prices and its short supply.
