Industry experts to weigh in on the role of digital technologies in accelerating trade

GEORGE TOWN: The Export Excellence Awards (EEA) 2022 roadshow will soon be making its next stop on Penang island.

The EEA 2022 Penang roadshow will be held on May 27, starting 2.30pm, at The Wembley, St Giles Hotel. Those interested to join can register online at http://bit.ly/EEAPenang.

During the event, there will be two panel discussions revolving around the current and future trends anticipated to impact exports.

Digital technology focus

The first, which will focus on the topic of “Accelerating Trade through Digital Technologies”, will feature Digital Penang Sdn Bhd chief executive officer (CEO) Tony Yeoh, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Penang branch chairman Datuk Lee Teong Li, Pentamaster Corp Bhd executive chairman Chuah Choon Bin and Standard Chartered Malaysia medium enterprise business banking executive director Woon Siew Hoong.

These industry players will be discussing the role of digital technologies in boosting trade while also touching on the global market recovery and its impact in Malaysia; megatrends that will shape the future of global trade, global trade solutions and business-to-business services for export facilitation, as well as opportunities through business matchmaking platforms.

Yeoh, for one, has been the CEO of Digital Penang since April 2020. A government agency for Penang state, Digital Penang was established to accelerate efforts to capture opportunities in the digital economy and promote a digitally engaged society.

Prior to that, he was the chief information officer for Intercontinental Hotels Group in Asia, Middle East and Africa, based in Singapore, for over a decade.

Meanwhile, aside from being the FMM Penang branch chairman, Lee has an illustrious career spanning over 40 years in the fields of design, engineering and operations in the electronics and electrical industries.

Following that, he set up his own company in 2001, which was then acquired by United States-based Amphenol Corporation – one of the world’s largest manufacturers of interconnect solutions.

He presently holds the portfolio of director and CEO of Amphenol TCS Malaysia, a fully owned subsidiary of Amphenol Corporation.

A professional engineer and co-founder of Pentamaster Group, Chuah served as an automation engineer for National Semiconductor and Intel Technology Malaysia, leveraging his experience to develop the group into its present level of success.

Under his helm, the group has evolved from a simple automation house to a high technology group specialising in providing factory automation equipment and systems, as well as information communication technology solutions to industrial and commercial customers.

Lastly, Woon will bring in a different perspective from the financial sector. With more than 24 years of experience in the banking industry, he has worked in various leadership roles primarily in the commercial banking space and branch business development.

In his previous role with a regional bank, he headed the enterprise banking division covering mid-sized corporates and small and medium enterprises. He was also instrumental in developing the bank’s digital and solar ecosystems.

Women in exports

This will be followed by a panel session on “Women in Exports”, where Buma Logistics Sdn Bhd director Christy Bong, Hernan Corporation group CEO Anna Teo and SKB Shutters Corporation executive director Melissa Sin will be sharing their experiences and providing insights into the opportunities and support programmes for women exporters, as well as how digital transformation can remove barriers to growth.

EEA is organised by Star Media Group in partnership with Standard Chartered Malaysia, with PKT Logistics Group as co-sponsor and Matrade as patron. It is audited by BDO. For more information on EEA, visit exportawards.com.my, or email eea@thestar.com.my.
