Stuck on campus: UiTM fetes students who couldn't make it home for Raya

SHAH ALAM: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) feted more than 200 students who did not return to their respective hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri on Monday (May 2).

UiTM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs), Prof Dr Mohd Sazili Shahibi, said the university organised the programme for the first time to share the festive joy and excitement with students who were unable to "balik kampung".

"They (students) will be sad and solemn after not being able to celebrate with their families. To some extent, this event can help ease their longing,” he told reporters after the event here Monday.

Sazili said UiTM Shah Alam will provide lunch and dinner for the students for two days.

Meanwhile, Nurafiqah Aqilah Azali Sarugi, 22, an engineering student, said the excitement can still be felt this year despite not being able to return to her village this time around.

"This is the first time I am in Peninsular Malaysia. I am not sad. I am fine because there are many friends here. This is a new experience. If I miss my family, I will video call and talk to them.

"The staff here are good. Early this morning, they cooked chicken rendang ayam cili padi. Tasty,” said Nurafiqah Aqilah, who was unable to return to Tuaran, Sabah, due to costly airfares.

Computer science student, Ahamd Yasin Imaddudin Abd Hamid, 21, said he chose to celebrate at the university as he wanted to gain experience celebrating away from his hometown.

"I also wanted to accompany my friends who are unable to balik kampung, especially those from Sabah and Sarawak. Celebrating with friends is not the same as celebrating with family. Both have their uniqueness.

"When the university organises such programmes, we are very excited,” said the Kuala Nerus, Terengganu-born student. - Bernama
