Johor allows buka puasa events at mosques, surau

BATU PAHAT: The Johor government will allow breaking of fast events at mosques and surau during Ramadan.

However, state Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said only a maximum of 50 people were allowed at each function.

He said if there were more than 50 attendees, the mosque or surau management should provide them with packed food.

"Under the standard operating procedures (SOP) for breaking fast, every mosque can carry out such programmes.

"Other SOPs for activities at mosques and surau are the same as before. We are only relaxing (the regulations) for breaking the fast.

“The size of the congregation allowed is (proportionate) to the size of the mosque," he said after performing the Terawih prayers at the Parit Besar Semerah Mosque here on Saturday (April 2).

Mohd Fared also said cooking in surau and mosques was still not allowed, not even for the traditional bubur lambuk.

"Distribution of bubur lambuk is allowed at mosques and surau, but the cooking needs to be done elsewhere," he said.
