Home safety first for your homecoming

JOHOR BARU: With many returning from abroad to their homes after a prolonged time, the Fire and Rescue Department has some vital safety tips.

“Do not enter and quickly switch on your stove or air-conditioner. Open all doors and windows for at least 10 minutes first,” said Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Yahaya Madis.

He said it was important to ensure proper ventilation in the home first to prevent a possible fire, adding that one should not quickly switch on electrical items especially air-conditioners.

“Turning on the air-conditioner first or switching on a plug is dangerous as a small spark can cause a big fire.

“Opening all doors and windows in your house will let any trapped gas to flow out first,” he added.

Yahaya said the next thing is to check the gas stove to make sure there is no leakage.

“It is better to be cautious than to cause an accident that can harm lives and property,” he added.

Yahaya also advised vehicle owners to carry out inspections to see whether there are any fuel leaks before starting their engines.

“Usually, there will be petrol smell emitting from a car, which is a sign of a leak. The owner should immediately contact a mechanic or get the car towed to a workshop,” he said.
