With Undi 18, political parties need to change structure to encourage more youth participation, says Umno Youth

PETALING JAYA: With nearly all states lowering the eligible age for voting and electoral candidacy to 18, Umno Youth said it is high time parties adjust their structures to allow more youth participation in politics.

Sembrong Umno Youth chief Hafiz Ariffin said in Johor, over 700,000 young people would be eligible to vote in the next general election, which he said would significantly affect voting patterns.

“The implementation of Undi18 in Johor will result in an addition of nearly 40% of new and young voters in the next election.

“This will have a significant effect on voting patterns in the next general election.

“This is a signal to all political parties in the country to adjust their membership requirements and party operations to allow the new generation to participate in politics and help shape the new landscape,” said Hafiz, who is also a Umno Youth exco member, in a statement on Friday (Jan 7).

Hafiz’s comments came after the Johor assembly passed a Bill to lower the eligible age for election candidates contesting state seats from 21 to 18.

He said the move complements the government’s efforts as well as the young people’s desire to participate in the country’s democratic process in a more inclusive and progressive manner.

“Johor Umno Youth welcomes the move as it will encourage the participation of more youngsters in politics.

“We would like to extend our invitation for youngsters in Johor to join our party,” said Hafiz.

Melaka is the only state left in the country which has yet to amend their state constitution to lower the eligible age for voting and electoral candidacy.
