Hot wheels: Firefighters tackle mysterious vehicle fires in Semporna and Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: Firemen on Sabah’s east coast had a busy time Wednesday (Dec 22) night tackling five burning vehicles in two locations.

Firemen said the vehicles were reported to have caught fire while parked with the engines off.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations division director Misran Bisara said on Thursday (Dec 23) the cases involved four vehicles in Semporna district and one in Sandakan.

He said they received a call about the four burning vehicles at Pengkalan Tanjung Kapor, Semporna at 11.22pm and managed to bring the fire under control by 11.50pm.

“Operations were complete at 12.26am,” he said.

“For the one burning vehicle in Sandakan, we received a call at 10.12pm,” Misran said.

The fire was brought under control at around 10.45pm and extinguished by 10.52pm, he said, adding that no one was injured in either incident.

He said the cause of the fires was still under investigation but believed that the one in Sandakan was due to faulty wiring.

“We are still looking into the cause of the Semporna vehicle fires," he said.
