4,154 people register as flood relief volunteers

PETALING JAYA: Over 4,000 people nationwide have signed up as flood relief volunteers in the Youth and Sports Ministry’s KBS Post-Flood Volunteers Squad.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said a total of 4,154 people nationwide had registered as volunteers following a recruitment drive on Monday.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu had launched the KBS Post-Flood Volunteers Squad at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre on Dec 19 before registration opened the next day and closed at 6pm with 4,154 registered volunteers.

Selangor recorded the highest number of registrations for the KBS Post-Flood Volunteers Squad at 925, followed by Perak at 408, Johor at 378 and Kedah at 351.

“The Youth and Sports Department will contact the shortlisted volunteers and communicate with them, to deploy them to the assigned location to assist the flood victims,” Ti told reporters at the Dusun Tua Institut Kemahiran Tinggi Belia Negara yesterday after the ministry sent non-perishable food and 300 cartons of mineral water to the institute.

Ti said the institute was also affected by the floods, causing more than 600 students and 80 staff members to be trapped in the building. They were also experiencing unscheduled water supply disruptions.
