Sabah Umno will comply with central leadership when it comes to working with GRS for GE15, says Bung

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno's position with its partners in Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) for the 15th General Election (GE15) has yet to be decided, says state party chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

He said whether or not Sabah Umno breaks ranks with its partners - which includes Perikatan Nasional - come election time depends on the party and Barisan Nasional's decision at the central level.

He said the autonomy given to Sabah Umno in working with GRS is strictly for state elections.

“For parliamentary seats, we have to follow what the central leadership decides,” he said when asked if Sabah Umno will continue to work in GE15.

Bung Moktar said if the central leadership instructs Sabah Umno to contest in 25 parliamentary seats in Sabah, it will comply.

He was speaking after officiating the Kinabatangan Umno division annual general meeting on Saturday (Dec 18).

On whether Sabah Umno had already decided on its GE15 candidates, he said it had more or less done so.

He added that it would go to each parliamentary constituency soon to gain a better understanding of the people’s sentiments towards its proposed candidates.

He also reminded all Umno leaders and members to stay united and strengthen the party instead of creating tension or divisions in the ranks.

He said this was vital to get the support and confidence of voters.

Bung Moktar said efforts must be made to tell voters that Sabah Umno and Barisan fight for the needs of the people.

He said they have to tell the grassroots that Barisan and Umno have changed a lot, and are working towards a better future for the people using new approaches.

As for getting the support of new voters aged 18 and above, he said the party has its own strategies without disrupting their lives too much as they were mainly still studying.
