Covid-19: Over 98% from 5,446 new cases are mild, asymptomatic


PETALING JAYA: Of the 5,446 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday (Dec 9), 5,358 cases or 98.4% of them were mild and asymptomatic infections in Categories 1 and 2.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the remaining 88 cases were those in Categories 3, 4 and 5.

In his daily Covid-19 statement, he said Malaysia recorded 5,427 recoveries, which was 96.6% of the cumulative cases.

"The cumulative infections in the country are now 2,678,465 and cumulative recoveries are 2,586,822 cases," he said on Thursday (Dec 9)," said Dr Noor Hisham.

A total of 419 cases were admitted at the intensive care unit (ICU), where 324 were confirmed Covid-19 cases, while 95 were suspected cases and under probe.

Among the ICU cases, 232 were on ventilator support.

Dr Noor Hisham noted that the national infectivity rate (R0) was now at 0.98 with four states having R0 above 1.0.

They were Perlis (1.07), Penang and Negri Sembilan (1.02) and Pahang (1.01).

The rest of the states and territories with R0 of 1.0 and below were Melaka (1.0), Labuan, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Selangor and Kedah (0.98), Terengganu and Johor (0.97), Kelantan (0.95), Putrajaya(0.89), Sabah (0.88) and Sarawak (0.70).

A total of 17 new clusters were recorded, taking the total active clusters to 254.

With the year-end holiday season around, Dr Noor Hisham reiterated calls for Malaysians to keep adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOP), including those who had received their vaccines.

He also said that more detailed data about the virus infection would be uploaded to the ministry's CovidNow portal at midnight every day.
