Police in Penang detain two for child abuse after video goes viral

BALIK PULAU: Police detained two women after a video of an individual throwing compressed packaging material at a baby and pulling the hair of an older child went viral in social media.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the suspects who were in their 20s were picked up on Thursday (Dec 2), after two reports were lodged in relation to the incident.

"Police conducted an investigation after the reports were lodged on Wednesday (Dec 1)," he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 2).

Supt Kamarul said investigation found the 44-second video was uploaded by one Cahaya Naziha Mohd Nhazeri into Facebook and the alleged incident had happened at about 6.45pm on Nov 24 at a childcare centre in Bayan Baru.

Supt Kamarul said the video was then uploaded by the mother of the baby on social media.

He said the suspects were detained to assist investigations under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.
