First roaming elephants, now swimming boars are a viral hit

A VIRAL video that showed a herd of wild boars crossing a lake in China’s Anhui province recently has caused a stir on social media, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The “adventure” at Taiping Lake near Longmenxiang in Huangshan city left many lost for words.

Some villagers said they had seen wild boars wandering around the lake before but they had never seen a herd crossing in such a manner.

The video filmed by fishermen in the area showed the animals swimming in two rows, and was a spectacle for the local people.

Anhui Normal University ecology and environment faculty lecturer Wu Hailong said wild boars usually travel on land and would not venture into water.

He said the incident could possibly be due to some “great excitement” which forced the animals to plunge into the lake and travel in that manner.

Although the virus was spreading in some communities and there were local transmissions, he believed the situation would be under control soon.

He also expects China to achieve a vaccination rate of more than 80% by year-end.

The country recorded 78 new cases on Saturday, the highest since Sept 16.

> China Press reported that Malaysian actress Beauty Eng stole the spotlight in the Malaysia/Singapore TV drama The Ferryman: Legends of Nanyang, with her portrayal of the late Hong Kong actress Lydia Shum.

Many praised Eng for bringing the Hong Kong comedian alive, especially in the way Eng mimicked her epic laughter.

“Suddenly, we are flooded with memories of Lydia Shum,” one social media comment read.

Eng posted a short clip of her cameo appearance in the TV drama on her Instagram last Friday.

“I have always received comments that my laugh is similar to that of Lydia Shum.

“I’m really happy to have had the opportunity to play her.

“She not only brought joy to a lot of people in Hong Kong but also to many around the world,” she said.
