Flash floods hit several neighbourhoods in Klang, 31 evacuated to relief shelters

KLANG: Continuous rains with intermittent heavy showers for six hours from 1pm Wednesday (Oct 20) caused several neighbourhoods in Klang to experience flash floods that inundated their homes.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said they were alerted to the rising waters at Taman Melawis, Persiaran Bukit Raja 2 and Jalan Mohd Yamin.

"At Jalan Mohd Yamin, the water level rose to about 1.8m which affected 15 houses there while 20 houses were affected by the floods at Taman Melawis.

"Along Persiaran Bukit Raja 2, the water level went up to at least 1.2m high," he said when contacted.

He said vehicles which tried to drive through the floods at Bukit Raja had stalled.

"As of 7.32pm, we have already evacuated 31 people," he said.

At Jalan Haji Mustafa, Kampung Salak Tinggi, waters also rose to about 1.8m and affected two houses.

"Efforts to rescue people trapped in their houses are underway there," said Norazam.

Port Klang Fire and Rescue Station chief Razif Mohmad Haris said the continuous rains caused monsoon drains and housing drainage networks to be overwhelmed that led to above ankle-deep flash floods that flowed onto roads.

In some areas, the water level was at knee height.

"Our Port Klang station had received several calls from residents at Jalan Mohd Yamin bordering Kampung Raja Uda, that their homes were flooded. Evacuation of families from four houses had been carried out where the victims were moved to a Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Hamzah at Jalan Besar Pandamaran in Port Klang," he said.

Meanwhile, at Taman Melawis, one resident Serjeet singh said the continuous rains had caused the drains to overflow.

"One of the main roads, Jalan Emas, was partly flooded which blocked vehicles from using the road.

"At most houses, water entered through the back flooding the kitchen while with some only the front of their homes was flooded," he said.

Other areas that were affected by flash floods were Taman Bayu Perdana, Taman Chi Liiung, Taman Setia, Bandar Puteri, Kampung Delek Kanan, Kampung Sg. Bertek, Sungai Udang and Telok Gadong.

It was learnt that a portion of road along Jalan Sri Hartamas 1, near the Home Ministry Complex had eroded and has been closed to traffic.
