GEORGE TOWN: Penang needs to form a bipartisan Economic Revitalisation Committee to address the drop in gross domestic product (GDP) amounting to RM2.1bil in 2020, says Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.
The Penang MCA chairman said a bipartisan committee was needed to allow the state government and the Opposition to contribute to rebuild Penang's economy.
"The recent drop in Covid-19 cases is a positive sign for the state government to take the initiative and introduce ways to address the post-pandemic economy.
"Since there is a bipartisan memorandum of understanding at the Federal level, this could be done in Penang, so that everyone can contribute to its recovery, '' he said in a statement Monday (Oct 4).
Tan said some small-and-medium enterprises had collapsed under the pressure of the Covid-19 pandemic, while many were hanging by a thread and in need of immediate assistance.
"On the other hand, the community as a whole requires various forms of aid and it is imperative that job opportunities be created to help lift families out of their predicament.
"I urge the Penang government to consider this 'rakyat-centric' bipartisan committee swiftly for Penangites to return to their daily lives under better economic conditions," Tan said.
