Fire razes houses and community church in a village in Penampang

KOTA KINABALU: Fire razed eight wooden houses and one community church in a village in Penampang on Saturday (Sept 18).

Also burned down were three vehicles, however no casualties were recorded from the fire incident which were reported in Kampung Babah Bunduon at 8.48am.

“All structures were 100% destroyed including a temporary church structure built by the villagers there.

“The operation was under control at 9.20am and was ended at 11.06am.

"The team conducted inspections around the area to ensure there are no other risks,” said a state Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson.

A relief centre to relocate the fire victims was activated at 2pm at Kg Babah Bunduon community hall.

“We are still counting the exact number of villagers affected but there were at least ten families that lost their homes,” said the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Penampang district disaster management committee in a separate statement said that all flood victims have returned home and the Penampang Sports Complex club which acted as a relief centre, has been deactivated.
