Covid-19: Penang's Taman Bagan market closed for sanitisation after trader tests positive

BUTTERWORTH: Another public market in Penang has been ordered closed after a Covid-19 case was detected there.

The Taman Bagan market was ordered shut from Saturday (Sept 4) after a trader there tested positive for the coronavirus.

The market is expected to reopen on Monday (Sept 6) after disinfection and sanitisation works are carried out.

As of Saturday, three public markets in the Penang mainland - Kampung Baru market, Taman Bagan market and Permatang Tinggi market - remain closed until further notice.

Meanwhile, on Penang island, two public markets and a food complex were closed since Thursday (Sept 2) after Covid-19 cases were detected.

On Thursday, the Padang Tembak public market was ordered closed after nine Covid-19 cases involving traders, helpers and a public health assistant were detected.

The Batu Lanchang market was ordered closed for a second time starting Friday (Sept 3).

Prior to this, the market was closed on July 29 after seven poultry traders tested positive for Covid-19 and it was reopened on Aug 18.

Traders at the Bukit Gedung food complex, meanwhile, have taken the initiative to temporarily close the premises starting Friday (Sept 3) to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) said the food complex will be closed for a week until Sept 9.

The closure will involve 49 active stalls in the food complex and it is expected to reopen on Sept 10.

Two markets in Penang – the Batu Lanchang market on the island and Bukit Mertajam market on the mainland - were closed twice since the Covid-19 outbreak in March last year.

Since March last year, several public markets including those at Taman Free School, Batu Maung, Perak Road, Batu Lanchang, Bayan Baru and Jelutong on the island and in Penaga, Bagan Ajam, Chai Leng Park, Taman Sri Rambai, Seberang Jaya, Kepala Batas, Machang Bubok and Bukit Mertajam on the Penang mainland had been temporarily closed for disinfection after Covid-19 cases were detected.
