Opposition strives for unity, pledges to work harder

PETALING JAYA: The appointment of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister shows the need for the Opposition to work harder to win over the people, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the Opposition acknowledged that Ismail Sabri’s appointment as the ninth Prime Minister was lawful.

“We take note that the decision was in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution, parliamentary democracy, and the constitutional monarchy,” the Opposition leader said in a statement late Friday.

“For the Opposition, this is a challenge for us to work harder to face the 15th General Election,” he added. The PKR president also called for collective action to deal with the pandemic and address the economic challenges faced by the rakyat.

“For all leaders, members and supporters, we urge everyone to accept this decision with the clear determination of working harder towards the 15th General Election,” added the Port Dickson MP.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said Ismail Sabri must be the Prime Minister for all Malaysians.

Congratulating the Umno vice-president on his appointment, he said Ismail Sabri must serve the people without prejudice.

He also urged the newly appointed premier to engage in bipartisan cooperation with the Opposition amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Friday, Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who was once the leading candidate for prime minister from the Opposition, indicated there was no difference in the administration as all were from the same coalition.

However, he said the main issue was for the Opposition to unite and become a formidable force.

“We must unravel (what has happened) and look to the future,” he said in a talk show session with comedian Harith Iskander.
