PKR Youth lodges MACC report against PM over ‘offer’ to MPs in exchange for support

PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth has lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who went on live TV to allegedly offer bribes to MPs in exchange for support.

PKR Youth said after going through Muhyiddin's special televised address on Friday (Aug 13), they found that parts of his speech were against the Federal Constitution, negatively impacting the rule of law and affecting the credibility of government institutions.

"In the speech, Muhyiddin clearly admitted that he had lost the trust of the majority among the members of the Dewan Rakyat.

"According to Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution, if the Prime Minister no longer has the confidence of the majority of the members of the Dewan Rakyat, then the Prime Minister shall resign from the Cabinet unless, at his request, Parliament is dissolved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"However, instead of resigning as prime minister, Muhyiddin, in his speech, has made various offers in the form of bribes to all members of the Dewan Rakyat to get their support to enable him to remain as prime minister.

"Therefore, PKR Youth suspects that he had committed offenses under Section 21 of the MACC Act," said PKR Youth in a statement by its chief Akmal Nasir and law and legal bureau chairman Chiew Choon Man on Saturday (Aug 14).

Section 21 of the MACC Act concerns bribery of an officer of a public body defined as offering a bribe to an officer of a public body as an inducement for the officer to vote or not to vote in any meeting of the public body in support of or against any measure, resolution or question submitted to the public body.

PKR Youth said as the element of bribery was made live on television, it had submitted a report to the MACC so that an investigation could be carried out.
