KL and Selangor social media users shaken up by tremors

PETALING JAYA: Emotions were running wild among Malaysians on social media, particularly those living in Kuala Lumpur and parts of Selangor who were hit by a mild tremor at around 1.20pm on Wednesday (Aug 11)

Scared, confused and shocked – or even amused – social media users discussed the natural phenomena.

Twitter user @thicckji, said: "Help KL people. Do you all feel the earthquake?"

@RajaShahmi echoed the sentiment, saying: "Why do I feel shaking? Was there an earthquake?"

Another user, @notorioustapir said: "So I wasn't the only one who felt it right?"

The Malaysian Metrological Department confirmed the matter, saying in a statement that an earthquake occurred north of Sumatra on Aug 11, with tremors reported in several parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

It added that the earthquake at 1.19am measured 5.6 on the Richter scale posed no threat of a tsunami to Malaysia.

@bellabrar13 said "no wonder my house was shaking earlier," as he retweeted confirmation of the tremor from World Earthquakes on the Map.

Some users, including @krishnanpavitr1, shared short clips of household appliances and home decor moving, seemingly by an unseen hand, to show that there was indeed a tremor.

In the midst of the event, there were also some humorous impromptu reactions from the public like @muhdfairuzzzz who said that it was his first experience, adding it was "kind of scary" that his belly was jiggling on its own.

"I thought it was my body that was shaking or swaying. Turns out it was a tremor," user @bichjuice said.

"Am I the only one feeling this shaking? Why is my bed moving on its own? Is there a ghost? Please tell me if there's an earthquake," said @zyymakhr.

There were also those who weren't bothered by it and carried on with their daily lives.

@liyaaaaaaaana said despite her family making a big fuss about the tremor, she didn't feel anything.

"Today is majorly shakey-shakey... Getting annoying though, I am trying to work and that means (trying to) type," said @JezebelKat.
