PETALING JAYA: At least 19 Umno MPs are expected to huddle in a meeting on Friday (Aug 6) to decide their stand on their party’s decision to leave the Perikatan Nasional government.
Umno sources said the MPs would meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to decide whether to stick with Prime Minister and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, or abide by their party’s decision.
Umno sources said the meeting was called after the party issued an ultimatum to its MPs to declare whether they are with the party in retracting support for the Perikatan Nasional government or action will be taken against them.
However, the sources could not ascertain if the 19 would make a unanimous decision, as some were in two minds.
It is also not certain that the MPs on the list would turn up for the meeting, as negotiations are still ongoing with the Umno camp under party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Earlier this week, Ahmad Zahid announced that 11 Umno MPs rejected Muhyiddin as prime minister and statutory declarations have been sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
There were 10 Umno MPs who stood behind Zahid during the press conference, among Pekan MP Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Machang MP Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub, Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Tanjong Karang MP Tan Sri Noh Omar, Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.
Others were Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor, Jerantut MP Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris, Parit MP Datuk Mohd Nizar Zakaria.
