Speaker denies getting more requests of seat changes in Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: There are no other lawmakers requesting for a change in seats in the Dewan Rakyat other than Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (BN-Gua Musang), says Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

The Dewan Rakyat Speaker denied news reports that four other Umno lawmakers, including party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (BN-Bagan Datuk), had informed him that they also wanted to change their seats a week before the special sitting in Parliament, which started on Monday (July 26).

“I strongly deny the report and wish to state that I have never received any of those lawmakers.

“That report is a lie and slanderous against me,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 27).

It was reported that along with Ahmad Zahid, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian), Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris (BN-Jerantut) and Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (BN-Machang) had also requested to change their seats in the august House but claimed that Azhar had denied the request.

In a virtual press conference on Friday (July 23), Azhar said he had not received any notifications or requests for a change in seats following Umno’s withdrawal of support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Earlier Tuesday (July 27), Azhar said he acknowledged Razaleigh’s request to change seats in the Dewan Rakyat and ordered the Dewan Rakyat secretary to take the appropriate measures.

Razaleigh said in a letter dated July 26 and addressed to Azhar, that he wished to move his seat to be nearer to the independent bloc, which does not support the current government.

“From the start, I have never supported or been aligned with the government that has been set up with the name Perikatan Nasional,” he said.

Razaleigh also said he did not know if other Umno MPs made a similar request.
