Building site warned over poor worker conditions

KUALA LUMPUR: The management of a construction site for a luxury condominium in the city was issued a notice due to poor living conditions for its workers.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the notice was issued so that the management would clean up the accommodation as it did not adhere to the Workers’ Housing, Accommodation and Facilities Minimum Standard Act.

“We were not satisfied with the accommodations, toilet facilities, dirty eating areas and even the rooms were not conducive for workers,” he said after inspecting the construction site yesterday.

ACP Mohamad Zainal said police have the authority to ensure construction sites complied with Covid-19 standard operating procedure.

“We have advised the management to improve the facilities for their workers as such conditions may cause the spread of Covid-19.

“Most Covid-19 cases at construction sites are due to failure to adhere to the SOP,” he said.

ACP Mohamad Zainal said the Kuala Lumpur Labour Department also took the necessary action on the construction site management.

Department senior assistant director Mohd Faisal Fariz Baharudin said the management was notified to improve facilities in two weeks.

“If they fail, we will conduct another inspection and issue new instructions to transfer the workers to better accommodations,” he said.
