PETALING JAYA: From exclusive memberships to discounts and freebies, Malaysians are doing all they can to get their friends to sign up for the Covid-19 vaccines.

Retailers, businesses and food and beverage operators, despite operating in a still-challenging situation, have taken the initiative to encourage more people to register and to roll up their sleeve.

1Utama public relations manager Lee Li Lian said they are offering a free five-year OneCard membership at 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Centrepoint Bandar Utama until June 7.

“All shoppers have to do is flash their vaccination registration on MySejahtera to enjoy the free membership. This is to encourage more Malaysians to protect themselves and also their loved ones, ” she said.

Lee added that previously 1Utama also offered the OneCard membership to health frontliners.

At the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) vaccination centre in Shah Alam, a Nestle booth was set up to distribute goody bags to those who successfully received their first jab.

According to a staff member, they will be there until June 6.

Businessman Aki Najmuddin, 39, who received his first jab of the AstraZeneca vaccine yesterday lauded such a gesture and along with the friendly and helpful staff at the centre, made him feel “appreciated and less worried”.

Jobbie Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Victor Chin who runs Jobbie Nut Butter selling homemade peanut butter in Kepong said the company was willing to invest almost all of its profits to offer a 50% discount to Malaysians who have signed up for the vaccine.

Other cafe and beverage businesses have also come up with freebies rewarding those who have registered or been inoculated, in order to encourage others to do so.

Beverage store Don’t Yell At Me is offering free winter melon chrysanthemum drinks to those who have been vaccinated at all of its six outlets in the Klang Valley.

Beverage store Bo The Avocado is giving away a free smoothie to anyone who has been vaccinated.

The Peekabo Cafe in Bukit Jalil has come up with the “one vaccine one cheesecake” offer for every person who has taken the jab.
