Suspected burglar fleeing from police falls to his death

KUALA LUMPUR: A 30-year-old suspected burglar died after he jumped down a six-metre slope to evade police.

Prior to that, he had rammed into an unmarked police car multiple times before leading police on a chase from Cheras Sentral to Taman Len Seng here.

A police corporal, who was in the pursuit, accidentally shot himself in the arm due to the impact of the collision on Tuesday.

“A police team from the Cheras CID was patrolling when they came across a suspicious looking Perodua MyVi at Cheras Sentral, ” said Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon

“They approached the vehicle, blocked it and identified themselves before the driver reversed and rammed into them before fleeing the scene.

“They chased the vehicle to Taman Len Seng where it collided again with the unmarked police car, ” he said, adding that the impact caused the policeman to accidentally discharge his firearm.

He said the suspect then got out of his vehicle and ran off before trying to jump from a six-metre slope.

“When the police found him, he was unconscious. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.”

The man’s girlfriend, who was also in the car, has been arrested.

“When we checked the vehicle we found items believed to be used in house break-ins.

“Further checks revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Kajang, ” he said adding that they have been linked to 15 other break-in cases.

He said the suspect had a record of 25 cases involving violence, attempted murder, armed robbery, house break-ins and drug related crimes.
