Khairy to Najib: Umno postponed party polls before because of GE14, yet we still lost

PUTRAJAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin has scoffed at Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s suggestion that having Umno polls before the 15th General Election will weaken the party.

The Rembau MP reminded the former prime minister that Umno’s decision to postpone party elections in 2018 to pave the way for GE14 did not help Barisan Nasional’s chances.

“The suggestion was made by Najib, and I just want to respond. Umno postponed party elections in 2018 because of GE14. Yet we (Barisan) still lost, ” said the Science, Technology and Innovation Minister at a press conference here on Wednesday (March 31).

Khairy was responding to Najib’s statement that Umno could be further divided and weakened if its party elections were to be held before GE15.

The remarks by Najib, who is currently Barisan Nasional advisory board chairman, were in response to Khairy’s earlier comment that the best way to resolve the current infighting in Umno is to expedite its party polls.

Umno is due to hold an election this year.

Khairy was speaking at a press conference after the launch of the Malaysian Vaccine Support Volunteers programme by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

Reezal, who is an Umno supreme council member, agreed with Khairy’s call for the party elections to be held before GE15.

“After the 2018 party elections, Umno pledged that there would not be any more postponements in future.

“The pledge has been made to the grassroots.

“The party elections must be held to form a fresh team that will lead the party in GE15, ” said Reezal.
