KUALA LUMPUR: With Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place at the 2020 Umno general assembly, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong is happy that the event is going smoothly under the new normal.
The MCA president said delegates to the assembly, at KL World Trade Centre's (WTC) Merdeka Hall, had to follow SOPs and practise physical distancing.
"The hall is usually packed with delegates but it is housing only half its capacity this time with a large number of members following the proceedings online," he said.
Dr Wee said MCA also had to hold its annual general meeting the same way to curb Covid-19 infections.
He said MCA had also initially planned to hold its AGM at the end of last year but was hindered by the movement control order (MCO) and eventually held it in early March.
Similarly, the Umno general assembly was initially supposed to be held in December but was postponed twice because of the MCO.
Dr Wee arrived at the general assembly venue at WTC around 8.30am and later joined Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and senior Umno leaders on the main stage for the opening ceremony.
Other Barisan Nasional leaders - MIC president Tan Sri S.A Vigneswaran and Party Bersatu Rakyat Sabah deputy president Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup - also joined them on stage.
The two-day general assembly began on Saturday (March 27) with the party's Wanita, Pemuda and Puteri wings holding their assemblies.
