Joint op in Ipoh nets 29 foreign workers without papers


IPOH: Some 29 foreign workers of various nationalities have been arrested for not having legal documentation in a joint operation.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said the foreigners, three of whom are women, were arrested at Jalan Sultan Idris Shah, Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar and the Memory Lane flea market here on Sunday (March 28).

“We received information that there were many foreigners in the city centre last Sunday.

“We checked about 300 foreigners today and brought 72 back to the Pekan Baru police station here, ” he told a press conference at the police station.

“Twenty-nine have been detained while the others were bailed out by their employers," he added.

“Many of them came out for personal errands including buying necessities, sending money back home and meeting up with friends, ” ACP Asmadi said.

Other agencies involved in the operation included the Immigration Department, Ipoh City Council, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, and Companies Commission.
