PETALING JAYA: The government will ensure there is water security for all Malaysians in the future under Water Sector Transformation 2040, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
In conjunction with World Water Day on Saturday (March 27), Muhyiddin said that the people had an important role to play to ensure a clean water supply.
"We must be thankful that we live in a country rich with water sources," he said adding that there was high rainfall as well as underground water sources.
"Malaysia has enough water sources but these have to be managed properly and carefully to avoid cuts in water supply and protect them from being polluted.
"The theme of World Water Day 2021 is "Valuing water", in line with the government's wish to increase responsibility to conserve the environment and water.
"We must be aware of how to care for our water sources," he said.
"For the government, the water sector is as competitive as the energy sector," said Muhyiddin.
He said that under the Water Sector Transformation 2040 (WST 2040), the water sector will be transformed from being a mere enabler to a dynamic engine to move the economy.
"WST 2040 will also ensure water security for all Malaysians.
"It will contribute to the development of the country's economy, including the social and environment sectors," said Muhyiddin.
He said this would be done in line with the government's agenda of Shared Prosperity, which promises a decent standard of living for all Malaysians in 2030.
Muhyiddin also urged the people to work together with the government in five strategies to secure water sources.
"First, protect water sources from being polluted with and treat water before releasing it into rivers.
"Second, take part in local community activities by implementing the Denai Sungai Kebangsaan (trail of national rivers programme).
Under this programme, 10,000km of trails will be built across the country by 2030 to handle the management of the environment.
Muhyiddin further said the other three strategies include beautifying riversides, using less water and encouraging eco-tourism.
"With these strategies, Malaysians will continue to enjoy clean water in the long term and ensure security of our water sources," said Muhyiddin.
