PETALING JAYA: As the tension between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional continues, Umno vice president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has called for Malays to be united as the 15th General Election (GE15) approaches.

While stressing that racial diversity is a unique aspect of Malaysia, he claimed that racial diversity and Malay rights were disrupted during the previous Pakatan Harapan administration.

"How can we forget what Pakatan has done during their leadership, where foreign investors began to pull out?

"Therefore, I want to stress here how important it is for the Malays to unite in facing a challenging political world. Like it or not, GE15 is just around the corner," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 24).

At the same time, Ismail Sabri also said Umno must strengthen itself and ensure that it is no longer divided.

"It is division that will cause the Malays to be weak and the repeat of Pakatan's 22-month administration," he said.

Ismail Sabri also said other races do not have to be afraid of Umno and Barisan if it comes back to power, saying that it has a proven track record of running the country and ensuring racial harmony.

He also said Umno must learn from its mistakes in GE14, where it lost Federal power in 2018 for the first time in decades.

"It is not wrong for us to admit our mistakes and learn from these mistakes so we can rebuild the party," he added.

Ismail Sabri also urged Malaysians to reject politics of hate and slander, saying that we all should find a new beginning in a "post Covid-19 new normal world".

"I'm confident our experiences during (the past year) have made us more mature and rational in determining the direction of the country for our future generations," he said.

Talk of an impending election resurfaced after a recent Umno supreme council meeting in Janda Baik, Pahang last Friday.

It is believed that Umno was deliberating on an ultimatum by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who wanted to know by March 1 whether or not Barisan would contest GE15 as part of Perikatan.
