Cops raid restaurant decorated with Communism-inspired wallpaper

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A restaurant owner has landed himself in trouble for "decorating" his premises with wallpaper containing elements of communist ideology at Jalan Icon City here.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Shafee Samad said acting on public tip-off, police conducted an inspection at the premises at about 12.40pm on Saturday (Jan 2).

"A police team from D9 and D7 units as well as the district Special Branch visited the premises and thorough checks found several elements of communist ideology on a wallpaper in the restaurant dining area," he said in a statement.

ACP Shafee said the 764.5cm x 213cm wallpaper featured the caricatures of Chinese Revolution leader Mao Tse-Tung, a soldier holding a red book and a group of Chinese army.

He said there were also Chinese writings on the wallpaper.

ACP Shafee said police seized the wallpaper and four small cups bearing the face of Mao Tse-ung.

He said a 23-year-old manager of the restaurant has also been detained and brought to Central Seberang Prai police headquarters for further investigation.

ACP Shafee said investigation found that the restaurant is owned by a 41-year-old man and his Chinese national wife.

He said during the inspection, the suspect was not at the premises and was currently undergoing Covid-19 quarantine in Penang.

ACP Shafee said police is still investigating the case.

It is learnt that the suspect has another outlet in Pulau Tikus that has a similar concept.
