Mind your manners, PAS told

PETALING JAYA: Member of Dewan Negara Perak (Advisory Council to the Ruler) Datuk Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini has reprimanded PAS after the party’s news portal Harakahdaily allegedly showed disrespect to the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

He said he had issued several statements via Facebook on the need for PAS to show respect to the Sultan of Perak.

He said his Facebook posts were a criticism of how the news portal did not adhere to palace protocol that must be respected by the media when it involved news reports that touched on the Perak Ruler.

“I will speak out against any individual or party who show disrespect to the Ruler. I am not hitting out at PAS per se.

“Harakahdaily has repeatedly gone against the protocol of media ethics when reporting on Sultan Nazrin Shah.

“However, I am happy that Harakahdaily has realised its errors and has corrected them. I hope they have learnt a lesson from this and will not repeat such errors in future, ” said Annuar yesterday.

On Friday, he posted a statement saying the chief editor of Harakahdaily should “learn to have manners” and not place the photographs of Sultan Nazrin on equal standing with photographs of other people.

“My advice to the Harakahdaily chief editor: learn to be tactful when it comes to upholding the customs of the state with a royal institution and a sultanate. When it comes to placing photographs, do not place photographs of a state assemblyman together with the photograph of a Ruler as if both of them are of similar status, ” wrote Annuar.

On Wednesday, Harakahdaily allegedly placed photographs of Sultan Nazrin and PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan alongside each other when it published a news report that PAS always upheld the institution of the Malay Rulers.

On Friday, the portal again placed the photographs of Sultan Nazrin and Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria side by side, which accompanied an article on Razman’s apology for not having attended the audience with the Ruler during the state political crisis.

The crisis on Dec 4 was triggered after Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu was removed from the mentri besar’s post when he lost a confidence vote at the state assembly.

Harakahdaily has since removed the photographs of Takiyuddin and Razman and apologised to the palace for not adhering to royal protocol.

Razman called off the audience with Sultan Nazrin at Istana Kinta on Dec 8 after he was instructed by the party leadership to cancel the audience during the crisis.

However, Razman, who is Gunung Semanggol assemblyman, Selama’s Mohd Akmal Kamaruddin and Kubu Gajah assemblyman Khalil Yahya later apologised to Sultan Nazrin for cancelling the audience with the Ruler on Dec 8.

Razman said an official letter would be sent to His Royal Highness.

“All three of us have always pledged our loyalty towards Sultan Nazrin, therefore we humbly apologise for cancelling the audience with him, ” he said.
