BUTTERWORTH: A total of 120 beachgoers at Pantai Bersih here were slapped with RM1,000 fine each during a police spot check on Sunday (Oct 11) for violating the recovery movement control order (MCO) period.
They were fined for not wearing face masks and failure to practise sufficient social distancing at the beach located behind the Bagan Ajam rest area.
North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said checks by the enforcement team comprising policemen and officers from Health Ministry and Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) found these offences to be the major ones committed among others at the area during the inspection from 6pm to 7.45pm.
"There was no social distancing among visitors here.
"We have contacted the authority of this place and ordered that all recreational and open space here be closed until standard operating procedures (SOPs) are complied.
"As the number of Covid-19 cases are still on the rise, I urge people especially the elderly and children to stop going to crowded places," he told reporters after leading the operation.
Apart from sealing off the place with tape, five premises operating at the rest area without valid licences were slapped with compounds by MBSP.
ACP Noorzainy said the rest area was not closed to motorists.
