In wake of Covid-19 clusters, prison authorities told to come up with new SOPs

PUTRAJAYA: Prison authorities have been asked to come up with new standard operating procedures (SOPs) in managing inmates to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said new SOPs were needed to reduce the number of cases in prisons, particularly among inmates.

He pointed to the number of cases recorded on Oct 6, where out of 691 positive cases, 401 were recorded in prisons in Kedah and Taiping, Perak.

He said this had contributed to the high number of cases reported, which had alarmed the public.

"The old SOPs including on the transportation of inmates to court, and the situation behind the walls where they are put closely together, can no longer be used.

"We have asked the Prisons Department to come up with new SOPs to reduce infection," he said in his daily briefing here on Wednesday (Oct 7).
