SIBU: A 120km road linking Kapit and Song which is nearing completion will help reduce travelling time between both towns – a journey that usually takes up to three and a half hours by express boat.
However with the new road, motorists can reach Kapit in less than two and half hours.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on Sunday (Oct 4) rode all the way on a superbike from Sibu to Kapit on the new road.
He visited the Nanga Ngemah/Nanga Temalat Road project site in conjunction with “Rombongan Lawatan Kerja dan Ekspedisi Bermotosikal YAB Ketua Menteri Menggunakan Jalan Temalat-Ngemah ke Song” programme.
About 80 superbikes were involved in the convoy which included Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affair Minister, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, state Tourism Arts and Culture Minister, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development Datuk Julaihi Narawi.
With the completion of the 9.6km Nanga Ngemah/Nanga Temalat road, it will connect residents in Song and Kapit with Sibu.
The Nanga Ngemah/Nanga Temalat road is the last section of the whole Sibu-Kapit road project. It is expected to be completed this December at a cost of RM79mil.
The road link will improve socio-economic growth within the adjoining areas by improving connectivity and providing a safe, fast and convenient accessibility between major towns and rural areas in Sarawak.
The project will greatly benefit residents in the areas as it helps to reduce traveling cost and time from other towns to Kapit and Song as it offers an alternative mode of transportation.
