Men claim sightings of plane crash off Penang waters, SAR operations find nothing

GEORGE TOWN: Two men lodged a police report, claiming that they saw a plane crash in Pulau Keramat off Tanjung Bungah here Sunday (Sept 20).

They claimed that the plane that crashed was a private plane.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said a search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out, but the officials did not find anything.

The SAR was joined by the police, Bomba, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the marine police.

Meanwhile, Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Muhamad Salleh Zainun said they received a call on the alleged incident at 2.28pm.

“We launched an investigation with the police at the place of incident, but found incomplete information and no other witnesses.

“The distance between the island to the shore is approximately 4km and when the MMEA and marine police arrived at the scene, they did not find anything.

“The MMEA informed us that they were in touch with the Butterworth air base and that there were no reports about any plane crash today.

“The operation was called off by Bomba and ended at 4.20pm.

“We were informed that the MMEA and marine police ended their operations at 7.40pm.

“The operations will remain closed until we receive new information, ” Muhamad Salleh added.
