SPAN: Investigation paper on Sg Gong polluters ready within a week's time

PETALING JAYA: The investigation paper into the Sg Gong pollution will be completed within a week so those responsible will be prosecuted as soon as possible, says the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

Its chairman Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli said SPAN was in the process of completing the investigation into the Sg Gong pollution which led to millions without water supply taps since last Thursday (Sept 3).

He said that SPAN was considering using the harshest punishment available under the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (Act 655) for the culprits.

"SPAN will take strong action against the polluters of Sg Gong, which led to water disruption affecting nearly five million consumers in parts of the Klang Valley.

"We are looking at using Section 121 of Act 655, which provides a maximum fine of RM500,000, or 10 years' imprisonment, or whipping, or even all three.

"Under Act 655, SPAN has the right to investigate and charge any party which commits an offence against the treated water supply and sewerage services, including pollution of raw water.

"Group management and SPAN's licensing, legal and enforcement committee will assist the Environment and Water Ministry to take immediate action and to ensure the offenders are given the appropriate punishment.

"SPAN is now preparing the investigation papers and will hand them over to the prosecutors for consideration and further action in one week's time," said Wan Hassan.

He also said that SPAN was committed to ensure all water supply and water source polluters will face action under the law.
