SIBU: Police here are investigating a video of a traffic policeman executing a martial arts-style kick on a motorcyclist that has gone viral on social media Tuesday (Aug 25).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit responded swiftly to the video by saying that the police are conducting internal investigations into the policeman concerned as the motorcyclist involved declined to lodge a report.

In the video, two policemen were conducting a spot check at Jalan Temple at about 12.25pm Tuesday when the motorcyclist made a U-turn to avoid them

A policeman dashed towards the motorcyclist and high-kicked him, resulting in the motorcyclist to lose balance and fall from his bike.

According to ACP Stanley, the motorcyclist, 24, is a hotel employee here.

"Initial investigation shows that the motorcyclist does not have a driving licence. The road tax of the machine had also expired and it was not under insurance coverage," he said.

The bike, he added, had also been modified.

"Summonses have been issued to the motorcyclist. He has admitted to the offences and has decided not to file a police report," he said.

Police have also seized the motorcycle

"The public are advised to always obey traffic rules and regulations and have a valid driving licence," he said.

ACP Stanley also advised motorists not to make any U-turns when seeing traffic police as it could lead to various assumptions such as a person who had just committed a crime and was evading arrest.

"In this particular case, the officer had to act spontaneously," he said.
