Bangladeshi in Al Jazeera documentary detained

PETALING JAYA: Bangladeshi Md Rayhan Kabir who appeared in the controversial documentary produced by Al Jazeera was detained on Friday evening (July 24).

The National Security Council, in a tweet Friday night, confirmed the arrest.

"The Bangladeshi man known as Md Rayhan Kabir, who is wanted by the Immigration Department, was arrested today," the tweet said.

Bernama TV, quoting Bukit Aman CID deputy director Deputy Comm Mior Faridalatrash Wahid, reported that the arrest was made by the Immigration Department and that Md Rayhan had been transferred into police custody as of 6pm Friday.

In its “101 East” programme, Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera's report entitled “Locked Up in Malaysia's Lockdown” highlighted Malaysia's treatment of undocumented migrants during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had accused Al Jazeera of "false reporting" and called the broadcaster to apologise to Malaysians.
