PETALING JAYA: In an effort to instil patriotism among Malaysians, Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has commissioned a wooden signboard of the Rukunegara carved in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese calligraphy.
In a post on the Selangor Royal Official Instagram page, it said the signboard was created by Ting Wee Chia, who is a third-generation wood signage artist from Jonker Walk, Melaka.
“The five ideological principles of the Rukunegara are now enshrined by His Royal Highness in a wood carving made in the style of the traditional symbolic signboard of the Chinese community in Malaysia.
“The signboard is now housed at Istana Alam Shah, Klang, ” the post said.
The post noted that the Rukunegara carving was made from a large piece of “mersawa” wood from a tree that is said to have been 100 years old.
“The work of sculpting the signboard was done entirely by hand, while smoothing and tidying efforts took six months to complete to ensure that the signboard was of the highest quality and will stand the test of time in line with the values promoted by the five tenets of the Rukunegara itself, ” it said.
The post also said that Sultan Sharafuddin has always wished that Malaysians be united and patriotic based on the tenets of the Rukunegara.
“His Royal Highness wants the 50th anniversary of the Rukunegara this year to be used to instil the spirit of patriotism.
“It is the hope of His Royal Highness that the Rukunegara can unite the people as well as create a just society so that the country’s prosperity can be enjoyed together, ” it said.
The post noted that it has always been the wish of Sultan Sharafuddin to see unity and harmony among the multiracial people in Malaysia.
As such, it said that Sultan Sharafuddin found that the most basic value that needed to be instilled in the heart of every citizen to form a Malaysian race that is truly patriotic is the Rukunegara.
